Paying for Therapy
Skill Spark Therapy offers several payment options to consider as you embark on a therapy journey. Therapy is a personal investment and you should feel empowered when making your choice of therapist and how you are funding that journey.
Insurance Based Services
Skill Spark Therapy accepts the following commercial insurance plans:
- Aetna
- MN Care
- Medica
- Optum
- United Healthcare (UHC)
- Ucare
- Blue Cross Blue Shield
It is also important that clients understand that insurance based services may still incur out of pocket costs.
These costs may include: co-payments, deductibles, and co-insurance and are due at the time services are provided.
When obtaining services with insurance the client is responsible for:
- disclosing insurance coverage upon service initiation
- providing updated coverage information if circumstances change
- understanding the benefits of their insurance plan
If you have insurance coverage, but do not wish to use it, you’ll be asked to sign an insurance benefit waiver indicating you understand all services will be treated as private pay and not billed to insurance.
Private Pay Services
Clients may choose to pay privately rather than utilize insurance or their benefit plans may do so because:
- they are seeking relational therapy not covered in the benefit plan
- there is a preference to avoid diagnosis or sharing this information with a third party
- therapist of choice is out of network with benefit plan
- requested services are outside the scope/not covered by insurance.
For clients who have out of network benefits, we can provide a superbill to submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement.
Private pay clients are entitled to a Good Faith Estimate (GFE) to estimate cost of care.
This will be provided via the client portal after scheduling your session and verifying private pay status.
When in private pay status, all charges are due at the time of the scheduled session.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my insurance will cover mental health services?
Call the number on the back of your insurance card and ask to verify your benefits for mental health and psychotherapy. Clients are responsible to understand their insurance benefits and covered services.
Who submits claims for services to insurance companies?
If you have insurance that Skill Spark Therapy is credentialed and paneled with, we will submit claims on your behalf as a convenience and service for our clients. If you have out of network insurance, Skill Spark Therapy will provide you with the information necessary to file a claim with your insurance company independently.
Can I manage my Skill Spark Therapy account online?
Yes, all clients may access their accounts online via the client portal. There is also a mobile app available for the Simple Practice Client portal via the app store.
Messages sent via the client portal provide a higher level of security. It is recommended that clients utilize the portal for communication needs with their therapist.
What if I have insurance coverage, but don’t want to use it?
As a client you can choose to waive your insurance coverage for a variety of reasons. Doing so means that you have elected not to submit claims to insurance and understand the differences in payment when you make this decision.
What if insurance denies a claim for services?
Every attempt will be made to contact the insurance company and determine the reason for claim denial. If the service can be resubmitted for payment, Skill Spark Therapy will do so. However, if the service is not covered, the client is responsible for the cost of the services rendered.
Do you charge for missed appointments?
Yes, Skill Spark Therapy has a policy of charging for late cancellations (less than 24 hours) and no-shows to appointments. However, each client is eligible to have this fee waived one time while they are a client of Skill Spark Therapy. If an emergency arises, and your individual therapist agrees it was unavoidable, they may also allow a one time waiving of the fee.
What happens if I have unpaid invoices for services rendered?
Skill Spark Therapy will attempt to bill the client’s payment method on file once an invoice is created for the service. If this is unsuccessful, the client will be billed each month for services that remain unpaid.
Clients with an unpaid balance require a payment arrangement to continue scheduling future sessions. Skill Spark Therapy reserves the right to charge a late fee for bills paid 30 days after services were rendered.
For bills that remain unpaid after 60 days, Skill Spark Therapy reserves the right to refer these bills to a collection agency. If you are struggling with an unpaid bill, please contact the office to discuss payment arrangements.
